Cookie Use In This Application
(In compliance with the EU e-Privacy Directive 26th May 2012)
What Are Cookies?
Cookies are a simple text file stored on your computer used to remember something about the activity performed on this website and its applications. On many websites cookies are used to record things such as search terms used, how people arrived at a website, what pages they viewed, what products were of interest and so on. On sites that involve login functionality they are often used to retain login information so that visitors do not have to keep logging in at every page in order to use facilities and buy products.
On the 26th May 2012 the New EU cookie law (e-Privacy Directive) came into effect which meant that any website using cookie technology must inform visitors that cookies were being used and what they are being used for.
What Cookies Are Used In Book-It?
The following cookies
are used in the Book-It application on this website
Why Are Cookies Used In Book-It?
As you use the Book-It application and move from screen to screen, depending on the screen that you are using, the system may need to remember who you are in order to determine what features should be made available to you and to determine what things you have already done in order to help you to complete certain processes such as proceeding to the checkout etc. You can do very basic things within the Book-It application without using cookies such as browsing a summary of events that are coming up, looking at event information in detail etc, however, in order to do a number of things that you need to be a member or registered contact for, you may need to log in by providing a member / contact number or email address and a password. Once you have provided valid values for these the system will then let you do extra things such as book events, pay balances, update your personal details, look at other members / contacts attending an event, query transport options etc.
The cookies used in Book-It really just revolve around identifying yourself to the system i.e. logging in so that the system can identify you and present appropriate options to you. If you simply log into the system by providing a member / contact number or email address and password then these will be stored in a session variable which is temporarily stored and known as the ASPSESSIONID cookie. This cookie will be stored when you complete the login screen and will then be remembered as you move from screen to screen within the application and will automatically be deleted when you end your browsing session on this site or after a period of time elapses during which you have been inactive (the default for this is 20 minutes but may vary from site to site if a webmaster has changed the defaults for that website).
Once you have ended a session and returned to the site again you will need to log in again in order to get access to extra features that can only be provided once the system has identified you. In order to avoid having to log in each time you use the application, however, Book-It provides a 'tick box' feature called 'remember me'. If you tick this box when logging in then the system will remember your contact / member number and password on that computer each time you return so that you will not have to log in again. This feature uses the MEMBERID and PASSWORD cookies to achieve this. These cookies will not expire automatically like the session cookie but you can remove them at any time by selecting the 'prevent auto login' option on the 'My Details' screen.
Are Cookies Secure. Are They Exposed To Other People, Websites Or Applications?
Cookies that are stored by this application can only be read by this application and only when logged in on the same device and as the same user under which the cookies were stored. The cookies cannot be read by anyone logged into the device as another user or by another website you are browsing. Cookies are therefore generally secure and should not pose a security risk for you, however, caution should be exercised when sharing a computer with another person. Cookies should be enabled in all instances to enable full functionality in the application and cookies used by users will generally be deleted when closing the browser session or after a period of inactivity, however, you should avoid the use of the 'remember me' feature when sharing a computer with other users who may share the same device with you and may be logged into that device under the same login name as this may automatically log them into this application in your name without them having to know your member / contact number and password as these will be stored as permanent cookies that will be read as soon as they use the application.
If you continue to use the Book-It application without changing your cookie settings from the default windows option, it will have to presume that you are happy to receive cookies from this application. If, however, you are not happy to receive cookies from this application, you can change your browser cookie settings at any time. Please note this may affect other parts of this website not just this application.
How Can I Manage Website Cookies?
The browsers of most computers, smartphones and other web–enabled devices are typically set up to accept cookies by default. You can change the cookie preferences in your browser for this website or any website. You should consult your browser's help function for details of how to do this. Alternatively, you may want to visit www.aboutcookies.org, an independent website which contains comprehensive information on how to do this on a number of desktop browsers.
Please remember, however, that cookies are often used to enable and improve certain functions on this website and specifically within this application. If you choose to switch certain cookies off, it could affect how this application works. For example, if your browser is set to disable cookies, although you will still be able to view events, you won't be able to log on to book events, pay balances, renew or view and update your personal details.
